It was just a couple of years ago that I had one easy decision- do I dress as a scandalous nun, or an indecent police officer?  This year I was in for a rude awakening and this mom was not a happy customer walking into the costume shop.

Before I get on my soapbox, I want to answer a few questions that may come up as you read:

  1. I am not the DIY type so I am not making a costume. Not only am I not creative, I’m pretty confident that I have never sewn a single thing in my life. True Story!
  2. Even if I was creative, I don’t have time for that right now.
  3. I went to the store 8 days before Halloween, so I had plenty of time!

Okay, now that the burning questions have been answered I can proceed with my story.

I visited the first shop with no baby in tow so I had plenty of time to peruse the selections and focus.  My irritation set in pretty early since they seemed to have no options that were family friendly or cute. The costumes that didn’t show all of your body parts were frumpy.  No, I do not want to be a giant clown or princess in a huge tent that is labeled as a gown. Why is there no in between option? Why can I not dress as a witch without showing all of my cleavage?

Where to next?  I headed to my favorite department store, hoping to find something a little less risqué.  My disgust turned to anger when said department store had most of their Halloween things put away and Christmas items out.  I will remind you again that this was 8 days before Halloween, that’s more than a week!

So, it was back to the costume shop. On the 2nd trip, I brought the hubs along so he could help.  We were greeted by a very friendly guy claiming that all items were on sale. I asked where the mom appropriate costumes were located and he pointed to the back corner of the store.  Needless to say this was a very small selection that I discovered on my first trip- a clown, witch etc.

By the end of the trip, I ended up picking up some ‘Monster’ gloves, hat, and boot covers. I wore a Monsters Inc shirt with some leggings and called it a day.  While this turned out fine, and was quite comfortable to wear, I settled. Obviously, now that I know I will plan much earlier next year.

On the plus side, my daughter made an adorable Care Bear 🙂
